Take a Deep Breath

I am amused by a prompting trick. So much so, that I generated some content using ChatGPT to express the amusement.

Take a deep breath
——————-

Let’s talk about Large Language Models, or LLMs. You know, those text-generating machines that everyone thinks are going to revolutionize the world. But here’s the kicker: some AI experts suggest that if you want a better response from an LLM, you should prompt with “Take a deep breath.” Seriously!

It’s like telling your dog to “take a deep breath” before fetching the ball. “Buddy, just relax and focus.” And the dog’s like, “Huh? Throw the ball already!”

So I decided to test this out. I asked an LLM, “How can we solve climate change? But first, take a deep breath.” And you know what it said? “Climate change is a complex issue…” Oh, brilliant! Like it suddenly had an epiphany after a nice yoga session.

It’s like thinking your toaster can make a gourmet meal if you just whisper, “Take a deep breath.” No, it’s still just going to give you toast. Maybe slightly more relaxed toast, but toast nonetheless.

These AI experts, I love them. They’re like, “You just need to get the LLM to calm down, and it will give you better answers.” Next thing you know, therapists are out of business because everyone’s just telling their problems to a deeply breathing LLM.

“Doc, I’ve been feeling really anxious lately.” “Well, have you tried asking an LLM for advice after telling it to take a deep breath?” “Wow, no, I haven’t! My anxiety is cured!”

And people are buying into it! They think these LLMs are suddenly going to become world-changing geniuses just because they took a metaphorical deep breath. It’s like expecting your cat to solve your Rubik’s Cube because you told it to relax first. Not gonna happen, folks!

So next time you’re stuck, remember to tell your LLM to “take a deep breath.” Because nothing says cutting-edge technology like a digital deep-breathing exercise.

PS: Jokes apart, you can take it seriously as well: https://lnkd.in/e2aQFdcy
